Individuals who assertively stick to their desires despite the challenges they face, reap the rewards of their steadfastness. Their focused determination brings them the results they so deeply desire, need and work for.
Nora is determined to ensure that her husband is healed. This happens after Helmer falls ill because of overworking himself dreadfully. Earlier on he had left his office because there was no prospect of promotion. He worked early and late but could not stand it. Helmer therefore fell dreadfully ill. The doctors advised Nora that it was in order for the family to go South to get the desired treatment. Her hopes to get her husband cured make her so determined that she pleads with him to take a journey to the South as if for herself. She entreats him that she would love to travel abroad like other young wives. She cried and tried entreaties with him, requesting him to remember the state she was in. Finally, she hinted that Helmer should take a loan, but he almost became angry and abused for being thoughtless and it was his duty not to indulge in her whims and caprices. Even still, Nora remains hopeful and determined to save his life. Her determination and hope is further displayed when she goes against the chauvinistic society’s strict measure of not allowing women to borrow loans and desire to be like a man. At this time, Nora was faced with a number of challenges which could easily topple a weak willed woman. Not Norah. Her father was so ill that he later died and she was also expectant. She avoided a direct confrontation with her husband because he had strong opinions about money and it would be humiliating for him to know that he owed her anything. Nora’s hope and determination are her strongest virtues, coupled with an earnest desire to have her husband healed, she dares and braves the waves of a chauvinistic society; mental torture, personal financial risk, illness, and death to emerge victorious. In the long run, her efforts pay off when her husband returns as sound as a bell.
Ann never gives up despite the hurdles she faces. When she gives birth, she is forced to leave her child among strangers. She sacrifices the daughter-mother relationship with her daughter in order to be Nora’s Nurse. After she got into trouble by getting impregnated, she was glad to find a place to work. The wicked man totally abandoned her and her child. He did not do a single thing for the two despite impregnating her. Ann never gives up, she seeks employment as a nurse and purposes to be good at her job. Nora asserts that she was a good mother to her when she was little. It is because of her excellent love and care as a maid, that makes Nora trusts in her to take care of her children should anything happen to her. Even though life has handed her difficulties and a fair share of nerve wrenching encounters, she still renders excellent services to humanity without any bitterness. She says that Nora had no other mother but her. Her resilience is thus evident in light of the unfortunate encounters that befall her. Despite being abandoned by the father, Ann’s child later is confirmed and church and married.
Mrs. Linde goes through so many challenges both in and out of her marriage, that would cripple a weak woman. At first, she is forced to abandon her husband Krogstad to marry a richer man. This was because he had no prospects at that time and she could not wait for him. Mrs. Linde had no option then because she had a bedridden mother and two helpless siblings. However, that was not all. After she married the richer man, he died suddenly. Unfortunately, his business was a precarious one and when he died, it all went to pieces and there was nothing left. She did not give up still. She turned her hand to anything she could find, which included a small school and shop. For three long years she toiled miserably as though it were one long working day – with no rest. She then remains with an empty life, with no one to live for anymore. She looks for something to occupy her mind. That is why she approaches Nora and requests her to talk to Tovald to offer her a job at the bank. Her efforts bear fruit when Helmer promises to get her a job at the bank. In the end, Mrs. Linde says that she was both glad and proud to think that she was privileged to make her mother’s life almost free from care.
Nora battles with a repressive and chauvinistic society that does not recognize the right of women to execute financial transaction and sees them as playthings who cannot be trusted. Any financial suggestion that Nora makes either makes Helmer angry or leads to a repressive comment that demeans the female gender. When Nora suggests to Helmer that she would not care about those who lent him money in case anything happened to him, he says that that is like a woman. To him, women are spoilt beings who do not have any useful or meaningful knowledge of financial affairs. Even when her husband becomes ill after over-working and Nora suggests that he takes a loan, he almost gets angry. She has to overwork herself and is almost at her wits end. Ultimately, she takes a loan from Krogstad with pretext that it was from her father. This causes unlimited storms in the family. Helmer immediately bars her from accessing the children and says that he can never give away his honor for her sake. He calls her names like a criminal, without considering that the money was used to get him healed. Nora is further blackmailed by Krogstad, who insists that she talks to her husband to keep him at the bank. She fights on and on until finally, she obtains her freedom when she walks out of the house where she has been handled as a doll and no serious discussion has ever been brought to the table. She is free to learn her own tastes and preferences and be herself again.
In summary, resilience is the key to battling the challenges of life, and those who never despair in the face of obstacles often triumph in the long run.
